What is Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction refers to ongoing difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual activity. Erections involve several body systems, including blood vessels, nerves, hormones, and psychological factors. Changes involving one or more of these areas can contribute to ED.
Several factors can play a role in erectile dysfunction. Your medical history, previous treatments, medications, and other aspects of your health will be considered during your evaluation with Dr. Coutinho. Blood pressure, testosterone levels, metabolic health, smoking history, and cardiovascular risk may be important parts of the discussion.
An evaluation can help identify possible causes and determine which treatment options may be appropriate for your individual situation. An evaluation of penile blood flow via an in-office ultrasound (Penile Doppler study) can be useful to distinguish between various types of erectile dysfunction and aid in deciding treatment options.
